Task 4.3 Rip Summarization

Task 4.3

States as follows

BB3 should only receive a summarized route for the 144.1.0.0/16 and 150.1.0.0/16

Do not use the ip summary-address rip command for this task.

Now, I'm not arguing with the SG, but I was wondering if you could use the following to accomplish the same thing (as this is just what came to my mind at first).

router rip
version 2
default-information originate
distribute-list prefix RIP out

ip prefix-list RIP seq 5 permit 144.1.0.0/16
ip prefix-list RIP seq 10 permit 150.1.0.0/16

Would this have accomplished the same thing?

  • Hi Guys,

I was using the below solution. Looks also working.

    On R3:

    router rip
     auto-summary
     redistribute connected metric 5

    Verifying:

    RSRack1R3#show ip rip database
    30.0.0.0/8    auto-summary
    30.0.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    30.1.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    30.2.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    30.3.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    31.0.0.0/8    auto-summary
    31.0.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    31.1.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    31.2.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    31.3.0.0/16
        [1] via 204.12.1.254, 00:00:18, FastEthernet0/1
    144.1.0.0/16    auto-summary
    144.1.34.0/24    redistributed
        [5] via 0.0.0.0,
    150.1.0.0/16    auto-summary
    150.1.3.0/24    redistributed
        [5] via 0.0.0.0,
    204.12.1.0/24    auto-summary
    204.12.1.0/24    directly connected, FastEthernet0/1

  • I agree...should be fine!

However I've done as the SG recommended!

  • router rip

    version 2
    default-information originate
    distribute-list prefix RIP out

    ip prefix-list RIP seq 5 permit 144.1.0.0/16
    ip prefix-list RIP seq 10 permit 150.1.0.0/16

Have not tested this solution but this looks a good alternative. Thanks guys for different ideas.
