MULTICAST RP/Loopback

hello,

when configuring our router's loopback interface as the RP, we need to enable multicast for that interface.

when and why should we enable pim sparse-dense-mode and when and why should we  enable pim sparse-mode ???

Is there any time when we don't need to enable multicast for the loopback interface ?

thx,

hadi

  • others will no doubt have more details and insight, but in my opinion, to be very simple, use sparse-dense-mode if you want to use auto-RP and use sparse-mode if you want to use static RP.

don't enable multicast for a loopback interface if that loopback interface is not going to participate in the multicast domain in any way.

  • i think it doesnot make any difference which mode are u using on the loopback cos the traffic is not going to come in or out the loopback interface, the only reason for giving this command under the loopback is to enable multcast on that interface, so that pim can advertise it as the RP..

In normal cases it work fine, i havent faced any problems or issues in this matter.

    Peace

  • Are you forwarding/processing dense mode traffic on your loopback for anyone?  (Hint, the answer is no)

But in sparse mode, you are processing stuff for the RP-based traffic.  So you can put sparse-mode on the loopback.  If you put sparse-dense, it's not like you are killing anything.  :)  Just if you have lots of dense mode traffic, you are doing extra unnecessary work.

    HTH,

    Scott
