Dynamips Workbook Volume I Diagram Errors

Hi Folks,

I have purcased Dynamips Workbook Volume I and began to work through it. I've been using Dynmaips for a year or so now so I know my way around it now and how to create labs with it. I download the IE topologies from the IE site. I start with LAB 1 and notice that the LAB is asking me to do things which don't make sense according to the diagram that accompanies the lab - for example the first task asks me to configure VTP Client & Server between 2 devices that that aren't even connected via a trunk (on the diagram)

For a sucessfull lab you need to have an accurate topology, diagram and task description. I don't know if I should be using my own generated .net file or the downloaded one version 4.1 or if the Diagram is indeed accurate? I notice that the labs  1- 10 have different topology, and therefore the .net files have to change, so how can I update the .net file correctly if the diagram isn't right.

I've spent a lot of effort on this over the last week and learnt very little.

Can you shed any light please? In my mind if a product costs $200 it should contain accurate diagrams at the very least and perhaps even include the dynamips .net file for that lab?

Regards

Mark Jones

    Hi Mark,

The .net file emulates the "physical" topology of the network, not
the "logical" topology.  The logical topology is created by assigning
VLANs, creating trunks, and assigning Frame Relay PVCs.  When you are
working on the switching section you need to reference the "physical"
network diagram, which shows the interconnections between the switches.
Once all the layer 2 networking is complete, then you can reference the
"logical" layer 3 network diagram to see where IP needs to be
    configured.  Make sense?

  • Thanks Brian. Maybe that's the problem - I'm not aware of the physical diagram? The PDF I bought only shows the logical topology.

Just to be clear, are you saying I can always use the downloadable .net file (4.1) to use for all the labs in Dynamips Workbook 1?

    Regards

    Mark

  • Hi Mark,

Re: your last question to Brian on physical diagram, did he answer it please? And did he confirm that the .net file (4.1) for all labs in WB 1?

    Your response would be appreciated.

    Best regards

    Olasoji.

Yes you can use that .net file for all volume 1, 2, and 3 labs since it
emulates the hardware topology, not the logical layer 3 topology. All
you need to do is assign the VLANs and Frame Relay PVCs accordingly.
