Hi there,

I am having a difficulties converting etherchannel link  into layer 3. I am getting an error message "Command rejected: Not a convertable port.". Can somebody help to fix this problem.

  • Hello,

Did you start with the ethernet ports.

    E.g.

    Interface range f0/15 - 16

    shutdown

    no switchport

    channel-group 1 mode on

    Interface Port-channel 1

    no switchport

    ip add x.x.x.x x.x.x.x

    Regards,

  •  Hi Jason,

Thanks for your help but it didn't work. If I do  NO SWITCHPORT, then I can't execute the CHANNEL-GROUP 1 MODE ON command. This command will disabled as soon as I type No Switchport.

  • Hello,

I just tried on my lab testing using Port-channel 1. Same problem as you. But when I used a different port-channel number 23 for example it worked like a charm.

Maybe it has to do with port-channel 1. (Maybe one of the Experts could elaborate on this [8-)])

    Try it.

    Regards,

    Jason

  • If you already have a portchannel created as layer 2, you would need to delete the portchannel (no int po1) before you can add layer 3 links to the portchannel, creating a layer 3 portchannel.

This is an order-of-operations problem - if you never create the layer 2 portchannel, there is no problem creating the layer 3 portchannel, but if the layer 2 portchannel gets created, it will not let you add layer 3 ports to the portchannel. Use int range fx/y-z; shutdown; no switchport; channel-group 1, and there will be no problem, because when the portchannel interface is created, it will be layer 3.

You need to set the member interfaces to "no switchport" first.  The
order of configuration would look like:

    interface range FastEthernet0/13 - 15

     no switchport

     channel-group 1 mode on

    !

    interface Port-Channel1

     ip address 10.0.0.1 255.255.255.0

If the port-channel is created as layer 2 first you'll have an
issue trying to combine layer 3 members with a layer 2 channel, or
    vice-versa.
