Kindly check whether or not my subnetting for this topology is OK【Backbone: 192.168.0.0/16 • Computers:10.0.0.0/8】
If I have to use "Static Route"--
Do I have to add one IP to each subnet for the interface of "Static Route"???
THE Topology:
(This interface does not allow me to paste my image of topology...
Can I send in my PKT file?)
Backbone: 192.168.0.0/16
Computers: 10.0.0.0/8
1st Sunnet needs 3000 IPs
2nd Subnets needs 500 IPs
3rd Subnets needs 300IPs
4th Subnets needs 250IPs
5th Subnets needs 128IPs
6th Subnets needs 60IPs
7th Subnets needs 30IPs
THE Mission:
Each PC can successfully PING every other PC and telnet every Switch and every Router
THIS IS HOW I SUBNET:
1st Sunnet needs 3000 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=3001 IPs
So the Backbone starting point 192.168.0.0/16 is subnetted by /20:
/20──192.168.0.0/20~192.168.15.255/20
2nd Subnets needs 500 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=501 IPs
/23──192.168.16.0/23~192.168.17.255/23
3rd Subnets needs 300 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=301 IPs
/23──192.168.18.0/23~192.168.19.255/23
4th Subnets needs 250 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=251 IPs
/24──192.168.20.0/24~192.168.20.255/24
5th Subnets needs 128 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=129 IPs
/24──192.168.21.0/24~192.168.21.255/24
6th Subnets needs 60 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=61 IPs
/26──192.168.22.0/26~192.168.22.63/26
7th Subnets needs 30 IPs +one for the interface of "Static Route"=31 IPs
/26──192.168.22.64/26~192.168.22.127/26
Or should I simply subnet as follows???

1st Sunnet needs 3000 IPs
So the Backbone starting point 192.168.0.0/16 is subnetted by /20:
/20──192.168.0.0/20~192.168.15.255/20
2nd Subnets needs 500 IPs
/23──192.168.16.0/23~192.168.17.255/23
3rd Subnets needs 300 IPs
/23──192.168.18.0/23~192.168.19.255/23
4th Subnets needs 250 IPs
/24──192.168.20.0/24~192.168.20.255/24
5th Subnets needs 128 IPs
/24──192.168.21.0/24~192.168.21.255/24
6th Subnets needs 60 IPs
/26──192.168.22.0/26~192.168.22.63/26
7th Subnets needs 30 IPs
/26──192.168.22.64/27~192.168.22.95/27

Next, how to configure "Static Route"???

Each byte is called an “octet”: 8 bits per byte, hence octet.
Addresses referred to by their first, second, third, and fourth octets.

Static routing means you will have to add routes manually (ip route xx.x.x y.y.y z command) on all routers to all networks. You will also have to make any changes manually.
    so, R1 to R2's LAN, to R3's LAN, R4's LAN, ....etc ....and back R2 back to R1, 3 to 1 , 4 to 1, 5 to 1, 6 to 1 ,7 to 1.
do the same for R2, to 3, to 4, and so on . u getting the idea, right? lots of work!

In dynamic routing, u will save time by typing 1 or 2 commands on each router. OSPF -or any other dynamic routing protocol (IGP) will take care of any changes automatically.

For subnetting part; if they say backbone 192.168.0.0, they probably want u to use 192.168.0.0 for p2p router to router connections. and 10.0.0.0 for LANs of the routers. but with class B /16 network u will get 65k IPs which looks like is ok for your 3k plus network,.

in the past version of this forum we were able to add a file to your user profile. not sure if we still can.

Ah, you're a godsend, Martinl. Thank you much for demystifying "static route" and "backbone" for me. Thanks to you, I now feel like continuing working on the unfinished task.

  • I'm practicing "Static Route"... Someone recommends--(without giving me the details)--using OSPF for this topology, saying OSPF is much simpler to configure.

Taking this topology as an example,...
Kindly tell me the detailed differences between OSPF and "Static Route"--

    Thanks.
