PIM-DM, what stopped mean in mroute table

Hello,

I am running simple PIM-DM lab. Lab is working as expected.
I notices, stopped keyword in mroute table. Could you please explain that does it mean ?

_(*, 239.239.239.239), 00:33:54/stopped, RP 0.0.0.0, flags: DC
Incoming interface: Null, RPF nbr 0.0.0.0
Outgoing interface list:
GigabitEthernet2, Forward/Dense, 00:29:06/stopped
GigabitEthernet3, Forward/Dense, 00:33:54/stopped

(10.0.0.5, 239.239.239.239), 00:33:54/00:01:38, flags: T
Incoming interface: GigabitEthernet3, RPF nbr 10.0.0.17
Outgoing interface list:
GigabitEthernet2, Forward/Dense, 00:29:06/stopped_

Thanks in advance,

    Hi rifter,
Great question. There is not much information out there about this output. Here is how I see the output.

First, in your scenario, understand that this is for DENSE mode interfaces (not using an RP). When you start configuring SPARSE mode, then you will see this change.

Second, notice where the word STOPPED is used.

    • used for the entry
    • used the OIL interfaces (outgoing interface list)

    .

In both places where the word STOPPED appears, it is replacing the EXPIRES timer, meaning that the "expires" timer it is not a trigger for the entry to expire.

But notice in your example, what happens when the expire timer hits zero (expires) for the SPT (T) entry.

    Timers:Uptime/Expires
“Uptime” indicates per interface how long (in hours, minutes, and seconds) the entry has been in the IP multicast routing table. “Expires” indicates per interface how long (in hours, minutes, and seconds) until the entry will be removed from the IP multicast routing table.

    .

    .

    RIFTER EXAMPLE:

    _(*, 239.239.239.239), 00:33:54/stopped, RP 0.0.0.0, flags: DC
Incoming interface: Null, RPF nbr 0.0.0.0
    Outgoing interface list:
    GigabitEthernet2, Forward/Dense, 00:29:06/stopped
    GigabitEthernet3, Forward/Dense, 00:33:54/stopped

    (10.0.0.5, 239.239.239.239), 00:33:54/00:01:38, flags: T
Incoming interface: GigabitEthernet3, RPF nbr 10.0.0.17
    Outgoing interface list:
    GigabitEthernet2, Forward/Dense, 00:29:06/stopped_
