EVPN/L2VPN/PBB/VPLS/L2VPN BGP AF - Alternative to XRV/VIRL

It turns out that the vMX (Juniper MX960) software may support VPLS/EVPN/L2VPN/PBB/L2VPN BGP AF.  VMX may not be "Cisco", but from my experience, if you can configure a Juniper you can configure a Cisco easy.  My disclaimer is this (however), I do not know if this support is just control plane, data plane, or both.

  • wut??  your best bet for dataplane l2vpn on ios-xr and ios-xe is to just learn how to verify the control plane, or buy some 9k's and 1k's to practice with.

I'm not sure with other features but for the VPLS there is a blog post that shows that control and data plane works with vMX

I have read a recent lab review for the CCIE SPv4, and getting hands-on of IOS-XR is invaluable

Unfortunately, the blog post of the review was already deleted, I think it got too detailed and violated Cisco's NDA. It is the lab review of Nicholas Russo, it was posted by Daniel Dib in behalf of Nick on his blog, and after few days it got deleted.

    Hope this helps!

  • Hi Guys,

if i'm not mistaken the entire lab is virtualized... So how are they proposing to test us in anything but vpws when the rest isnt supported? The release notes for xrv 6.4.2 clearly states that L2VPN VPWS was introduced in 6.4.1.

Any input? I realize that we lucky few with access to hardware supporting the rest can hands on at work. Do we assume that theres going to be loads of questions on L2 in the written and almost noting in the lab?

    Cheers
