CPU still 100%

I'm trying to run workbook 4.01 using the latest version Dynagen 0.11.0 and Dynamips 0.2.8-RC2. Did IDLEPC adjustment and it improved CPU utilization but still running 100% after launching 6 routers, 4 switches and two BBs. Here is my PC specs:

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2GH
Memory: 1GB
OS: Windows XP Pro  32bit

By reading some forum posts, I also tried downgrade it to an older version with no luck. I also noticed it does not max out my memory. Memory utilization is only about 60%. Someone said it runs really well under 64 bit OS. My hardware only supports 32 bit however. Please share your success experience. It'd be much appreciated.

Comments

  • Idlepc is image dependent so if you tell us what IOS image you are using maybe someone out there can give you a good idlepc value. Also, did you decompress the ios image?

It's a good idea to share your net file so we can see if we can improve on your settings.

  • Upgrade OS to Linux :-)

  • C3640-A3.BIN is what I am using which was extraced from c3640-a3jk9s-mz.124-10c.bin. I also splitted Dymamips into 4 instances. Here is my .net file. Please advise a good IDLEPC.

  • Please change the MMAP = False and try using the   idlepc = 0x605c8b40.

  • I just tried this. The routers and switches loaded faster than before and I did see Dynamips start using available memory. Finally it reached 100% CPU and almost maxed out memory. The lab crashed at the end but I would say it is still a big improvement. Does it mean I need a more powerful PC then? Is it possible to make it work on this PC?

  • Hi,

Please check below config it may help you. Its running very well. Initially I had a problem like you after  changing mmaps and the idlepc , my CPU went from 90% to 1%. Its all depend upon your pc. Try to search through google with a good Idlepc value. I got two HP dc7100 and dc7800 Pcs, one pc is giving me 1% cpu usage other one is like you.

    Upgrade OS

  • Hi,

You need to enable ghostios on instance 1. Havig that disabled will suck up memory big time.

    Cheerz

  • Here are a couple of things I've experienced but haven't seen mentioned elsewhere:

    1. Get each device started and to the point it is sitting at an enable prompt, and make sure the console is configured to never automatically logout. Even the action of getting a console and pressing return a couple times has helped me. I have seen this make a difference of 25% CPU usage on a single 3640 image.
    2. Some devices and images take a long time to run through all sorts of startup processes and settle down to their idle state. 10 minutes is usually the worst case.

Those two bits along with a fair amount of experimenting let me actually get the full 4.10 R+S lab running on my old laptop (2GHz Turion, 1GB ram, WinXP Home).

  • I am using dynamips extensively, to get best idlepc what I do is to start two routers and do some initial configurations, once configured I try to get the idlepc and choose one of the recommended value, in some cases the CPU drops from 100% to 3%

    Cheers

  • to improve my idlepc, should i ignore the recommended value and experiment with others to see if there is an improvement?

  • I have found that when I start all of my routers, if I delay 15 seconds for each router startup that my CPU load is less than if I start them all at once.

  •

Try the link below: Gives a good tutorial on you-tube on how to tune idlepc
