    I have seen this day this video on youtube on how to connect GNS3 router to the real switch,

     

    the idea is very simple, you connect the router to the cloud, then on the cloud, you select which computer's interface that will bridge the GNS3 router traffic to the real switch.

    in case if you need to connect multiple GNS3 routers, then you need to install mutiple clouds (one cloud for each router).

    theoretical, if you want each router to be on different vlan, then you need to configure the switchport interface of the real switch and the computer's interface as a trunk, I will test this and post the result here.

     

    there is also nice thing in the video which is, when he doubled click on the GNS router, the console went to SecureCRT, this is also useful.

  • ok, to access GNS3 Routers through SecureCRT, see this video,

     

    in GNS3, change the preconfigurated terminal commands to SecureCRT, and then delete the code under Terminal Commands and insert this one: 

    C:progra~1vandyk~1SecureCRTSecureCRT.EXE /script C:progra~2gns3securecrt.vbs /arg %d? /T /telnet %h %p

    when you double click on GNS3 Router, you should be directed to SecureCRT,

    Is it possible to use only GNS3?
    Since I can't afford to buy 3560s here in Sweden cause they are so damn expensive i thought about using 3725s as switches, will I be ok for now?

    For routers I use 7200 with 15.3 IOS.

    Thanks for the post about 7200's with 15.3.  Are they stable?  How much memory and disk space are you giving them?

  • Hmm, looking @ Cisco's site, I only see up to 15.2.4S5(MD) as latest.

    I have a quad core with 8gb ram, uses 35% of cpu and 5gig mem with 20 routers and 4 3725's.

    So far it seems stable (IOS c7200-adventerprisek9-mz.153-3.XB12), I could use 15.2 but since I got 15.3 might as well use it.

  • So, I'm building ut the Advanced Technology diagram in GNS3.  I don't quite get the diagram - is this similar to the lab?  G1 is int Gi1 on each router?  and the numbers (on the page without IP addresses) are the third octet?  Or vlan?  Or both?

    So, it appears between R1, R4, and R6 - all G1.146 - what does G1 signify?  Because the other side of the router has G1 also.  And .146 appears to be in the same l2 segment?  What do you use between the three - "almost unmanaged, generic" switch from GNS3?

    For l2 links between routers, just a straight e1 to e1 ethernet cable - Like R7 to R9? If so, then how come it's just not a straight line between R6 and R7 via G1.67 connections?  And R5/R8?

  • I'm not sure I follow, what diagram are you using?

    All routers run on
    subinterfaces G1 is gigabitethernet1 but since you use gns3 i suppose it will be
    gig1/0.146 (if you are not using csr 1000v in gns3)

    I use now a "generic switch" connected to my real 3550 switches the ones that I have.

    The problem with the "G1" is that a given router, say R6 for instance, has G1 on both sides - so there's two G1's?  Of course, they're labeled G1.146 and G1.67.  It's unclear to me if the number after the . is a sub interface, a vlan, an octet, or what.  That's my question.  

    So between R6 and R7, there's a horizontal line and two verticals - common nomenclature for an ethernet connection - so is there a switch in between?  If so, is it vlan 67 @ L2?  But what about between R7 and R9 - they're G1.79 on both sides, but since it's a straight line, is it not ethernet?  Or is ie ethernet but straight point to point physically, with no switch in between.

    My question is: Is the VLAN number on the 802.1q config the same as the Subinterface number? For example, on R6 subinterface G1.146, should be configured as an 802.1q subinterface to VLAN 146? If so, the configuration on int g1.146 should be encap dot1q 146?

  • It'd be nice if INE could create seperate initial configs for the 7200's since the interface names are g1/0 instead of g1. Have them seperated for ease of use.

  • Its really not hard to do it on your own. All you need to do is a simple operation in your favorite text editor (Notepad, Wordpad, UltraEdit, Notepad ++, etc). 

    Replace this:

    GigabitEthernet1

    for whatever interface you are using in GNS3. 

    Not everyone uses the same devices with the same interfaces in GNS3, so if there is a GNS3 initial config pack released then it will also have to be changed by other users. For example, I prefer to use 7200s with Ethernet interfaces...you may like to use GigabitEthernet, and someone else may use FastEthernet. On top of that, some people use the 2nd or 3rd module so it would be Ethernet1/x or Ethernet2/x and so on.

    UltraEdit can edit multiple files at the same time. You can open 10 files at the same time (R1-R10 for example) and do a mass find/replace all. It also has the feature to "save all", so you dont have to save the files individually. 

    This is what I do personally to quickly adapt config files to my GNS3 topologies =)

  • Right now we won't be posting them, simply because some of the initial configs are in flux as we're making changes. Long term we'll post multiple sets of reference configs for different topologies, including GNS3 and IOU. 

    In the meantime I would do what plucena recommended and just parse the configs in bulk to make the change to match your topology.

    This approach works really well for me too but I use a program called find and replace. It's open source and you just point it at a directory instead of individual files. I unzip the initial configs availble in the lab resources and do a find and replace of the gi1 interface to rename it to match the 7206 interface I have in GNS3. It chews through every one of the configs in about 10 seconds and auto-saves all of them.

  • SO i spun up GNS3 for MAC (early release version).

    Running Mac Pro 24GB ram 5,1 3.2 Quad Xeon.

    Spun up 10 7200s - generic switch and cloud.

    Running smooth so far, CPU barely peaks above 10%.

    Cloud is configured to my 2nd NIC which is connected to a powered 8port switch (don't have an Ethernet loopback plug yet).  This allows me to use Wireshark on my MAC locally and sniff traffic on the INE build real-time and not have to deal with the junk on my main Ethernet interface.

    All good so far, this may be my preferred choice, once GNS3 is not bug ridden :)

     

    have 4 external 3560's and 1 3750 which I'll try to connect up for the main full labs.

  • I have the same setup. Except I trunk my Desktop with another NIC to SW1 on my 3560 rack.

  • yeah i need a 3rd NIC or just not bother with wireshark since it's not really a requirement in the exam except to interpret traces, but good learning tool.

  • the lastes Alpha release has packet capture now and this seems to work quite well on the MAC.

    The major downer for me is not been able to go ot the 'LAB' IOS images, i.e. no ISR's not sure it's in their roadmap but I read people saying well you can interface to IOU and CSR etc...kinda makes GNS3 a fancy GUI when all said and done if just using Cisco products, I can use IOU-WEB for that but again thats just a GUI and link builder.

    But for now I guess good to be able to capture on the Mac with Alpha 7.

    @Pieter...Yes I have the same output, also a GNS3 issue I think.

  • Regarding the MAC I've read it's related to using the L2 switch that is part of GNS3, if you use a 3725 with the switch module the problem goes away, although I have not tested this myself, I think I will now.

    Did using the 3725 with the switch module rather than the GNS Vswitch resolve the mac verify issue ?

    I've noticed another little issue ..

    If you use 7200 Version 15.2(4)S5 you it for some reason does not recognise disk0, so you cannot save your configs.

  • Sure you can, but it would be a different set of port numbers. All you need to do is put in a switch module into the 7200. There are plenty of youtube videos for this. Alternatively you can use IOU on the new GNS3 Alpha if you have purchased early access, but you will still have the same discrepancy between the port numbers. This is a limitation in IOU and to my knowledge there is nothing that can be done to fix this.


    Personally I invested some money on four 3560's with 32MB of RAM in order to store the 15.0 IOS. So far it has worked perfectly. In all honesty though, there isn't much content in the exam for Switching. You could just do a few hours on their rack rentals and you should be okay. Then run their L3 topology with GNS3 7200's and using the generic ethernet switches to make the connections. INE does a great job of separating the L2 and L3 topology so you may do them exclusively.

    are you sure of this image name? because there is no such image (15.3) code for this model in cisco nav. The latest supported IOS for 7200 is 15.2M/S only. So where did you get that one from?

    To be honest I don't really remember where I read about it but if you search for 15.3 XB12 you should get a link to cisco.com where you can download it.

    yes you are correct. I just searched it @ cisco.com. They mentioned that 7200, 7204vxr, 7206vxr are support this code.
