Dont know how to use the R&S Workbook Vol.1 Ver 5.0

Dear guys.

i am new and a beginner, just started to use your workbook.

i was trying to work out the R&S workbook on the newly updated
Vol.1 ver.5.0 but gave up few times, as the lay out has changed comparing with the
Ver.4.1, and i was in confuse when i am trying to work out the
labs.

1.  for exp. on the task 1.1, i was asked to "Load the basic IP
Address initial configurations prior to starting" , what does that mean
? do i do the copy one of the file in the "Lab Initial Configurations"
which i can download from http://members.internetworkexpert.com/courses/iewb-rs-vol1-v5/index.php  where i can download the file ? if yes, which file should i use to copy the configs into which of the switch ?

2. also, in task 1.1, it asked me to "Using the Diagram for ref.
configure access VLan Assignments on SW1, SW2, SW3 and SW4 to obtain
Basic Connectivity between the Devices with Ethernet Segments with the
exception of R6"

my question is , when i looked into the final configuration
provide on Page 15, i found some thing that i dont understand, which is
....

a. why SW1 have VLan 7,58,67,79,146 ? but what i seen on the Diagram given , the SW1 was only attached to VLan 7,67,79 ??

same case , for example, the final configuration in SW2 has VLan
8,22,43,58, but what i saw on the diagram , SW2 is only attaching to
VLan 58,8................also.....SW4 only has VLan 10 on the diagram,
but the final configuration has Vlan 10, 146

am i using the wrong Diagram ? or something else ? i am currently
using the Logical Topology Diagrams which i download from after login
in.

it seems it is alot more easier to understand the question in Vol.1 Ver.4.1, all the diagrams are on top of the questions, which makes it very clear

for each task, and as a beginer like me to start working with your workbook would feel much more easier in Ver. 4.1 format . i wish the format did not change

and the explanation was provided just like the Vol.1 Ver 5.0 in 4.1

Pls help.

Daniel

There is an initial config file for each device for each section in the
archive.  Find the rack number that you want, then find the "Basic IP
Addressing" initial configs.  Paste the R1.txt file into R1, the R2.txt
    file into R2, etc.

    2. also, in task 1.1, it asked me to "Using the Diagram for ref.

The logical diagram shows the logical layer 3 topology.  You need to
cross reference this with the physical diagram to figure out what are
the physical port assignments based on the wiring of the devices.  The
hardware spec diagram is linked from that page as well.

  • Hi Brian,

I have to agree with Daniel, I also hat a lot of problems to get started at all. There is a Introduction missing! Also the Document on the version 5 page are partly 4.1 document.

Now that I know that I have to setup the LAB and load the Initial config (the one loaded from the Website and not just Initiate the devices by clearing the configs), it seems to work fine.

What I like is that the Task and its Solution are NOT on the same page, this will help me not to look at the solution from the beginning.

The disadvantage is, you need a complete LAB environment from the beginning.

  • I am also very confused as well.  I am not able to find a physical LAN cabling diagram that relates to Lab 1.1 nor am I able to find a diagram that displays all the vlan that are required for VLAN port assignment.  Could someone point me in the direction of where I can download these diagrams?

    Thanks,

The physical cabling diagram is on the members page, along with the
logical diagram.  The physical diagram shows the actual layer 1 port
connections, the logical diagram shows the VLAN assignments, Frame
    Relay PVCs, and IP addresses.

    .

Have you downloaded the physical and logical diagram from member zone as Brian metioned?

I high recommend to use R&S ATC Video paralelly (along with R&S vol.1 ) because Brian also using same diagram in Vidoe as well so you will get more familiar with diagram and technology.

    Good Luck

  • Getting used to the diagrams is definitely one of the toughhest part. There was a great discussion on this topic in a few monts weeks ago. DennisD did a good job in putting together a diagram to help understand this:

    http://ieoc.com/forums/p/19155/164770.aspx#164770

Bear in mind that the best way to learn is to use this just in the beginning, in the end you really need to understand how the physical and logical diagrams work together, since in the exam that's all you got!

    HTH

    Good luck!

  • best way to understand diagram is to draw it by your own hands, draw virtual topology and physical layout. Do it until you feel you can see it with your closed eyes.

  • Actually I am trying to practise the workbook using IOU-POD v4.3 installed on VMPlayer. But when I checked, I cna see that the slots and interface names differ from INE workbook and IOU-POD setup. This take more time for me to indentify and do the lab.

Any work around for this ?

  • There is no work around for it.l You have to do interface management manually or some kind of script. Otherwise you can ask others to share their initial configs as per POD in question.

BTW, you should know that IOU is illegal to use and cisco can cause you issues by knowing that you hold on illegal binaries of IOU.

  • Hi Moomblack,

I was on your shoes when I started WB1. First of all, you need to
learn to differentiate the L2 network diagram and L3 network diagram.
This is very important as the exam will also go down to this path. You
probably need to start drawing the L2 network diagram yourself and
check this with the INE L2 network diagram for confirmation.

Then, every lab will advise you how the L2/L3 will/should look like or
you need to find this out yourself.
