BGP Confederations - MEMBER-AS vs SUB-AS
I see the term SUB-AS being used mostly. But MEMBER-AS is used some places too - mostly RFC 5065.
I am correct in thinking these two terms are the same?
"An Autonomous System number which is only used and visible inside a BGP confederation."
I just want to make sure I haven't missed something along the way.
Comments
I just did a search through RFC 5065 and didn't find any reference to SUB-AS or SUB AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM - only MEMBER-AS and MEMBER AUTONOMOUS SYSTEM.
It looks like the writer's preference in terms - RFC 3065, the predecessor of RFC 5065 also uses MEMBER-AS.
Both Cisco and Juniper use subautonomous system in their documentation:
It looks like two terms for the same thing to me...
Thanks Darrell.
I kind of found the same thing. It seems like the term "sub-as" took off more though.
Maybe because people read vendor docs more than RFCs?
It is called the CCIE and not the IETF_CIE. So I guess SUB-AS is right.
