1.41 RSPAN

Hello,

In this task SW4 is the server and SW1, SW2, and SW3 are clients.  If this was a production environment  and you only specifed that vlan 500 was a remote-span only on the server SW4 like the solution, would R-span function properly? If not does vlan 500 on all switches need the remote-span config as well.

Thanks,

  • If not does vlan 500 on all switches need the remote-span config as well

In production you would need to configure remote-span  under the rspan VLAN on each switch from where the monitor source is configured and every switch in the path to where the monitor destination is located.  This ensures that span traffic is correctly replicated.  Clearly normal unicast forwarding rules do not apply for VLAN configured for rspan!

  • Thank you for the clarification

  • EDIT: welshydragon is correct in his post.

Although for this task, one only needs to specifiy the remote-span under the specific vlan on the server.  The information will be propogated to the clients.

  • Yea but it does not show under the vlan config for the clients

  • Then you may have an separate issue.

I setup the following independently, did not have time to load configs before a class today.

    SW4 server

    SW1-3 as clients

    created vlan 10, 20 and 30

configured vlan 30 as remote-span on SW4 only

    Some output omitted.

    SW4 show vlan:

Same result on the other switches where vtp is propogating properly.
