Sip Phones not able to call or receive calls

I purchased
the deep dive modules for ccie voice from INE, im currently doing module 5 lab
however im stuck with a problem and I cant seem to find how to fix it wondering

If you
could give some pointers on what the problem could be.

I have a
problem with all sip phones they register then unregister after a while , I
cant call any of them or from them , while they are registered, calls between
SCCP phones work ok.

Also if I
switch all to SCCP everything works ok.

This
happens to all sip phones, when I call from an sccp phone it displays for
example To 1002 but no ringback nothing and after sometime fastbusy. IF I call
from sip to other phone nothing happens it just remains offhook.

Regards,

  • Try changing the setting under Device > Phone > SIP Phone in question for the field of DND to not be "Reject call".
Then reregister the phone and see if that helps.

  • Tried that but same result, its not just one phone but both phones with sip firmware same behavior, i used the initial configs provided. im working with local phones via l2tpvpn with 7962.

  • MMM i tried using for sip the phones locally to the rack and they work fine so my guess is some kind of problem with SIP via l2tp any advice on this?

    Thanks

  • Hi ,

When you say l2tp, i take it has you are using  VPN tunnel between these sites.

If Yes.Please make sure the policy map is not inspecting the SIP protocol.

  • I use my SIP phone over the very same L2VPN every day with no problems.
Have you tried looking in the UCM traces to see what is happening (if UCM is instructing the reregistration or if the phone is transient)?

It's needed CCIE practice for the lab - since they will most certainly have you digging around in the traces at least once or twice during the real lab.

  • HI MArk,

The trace indicate the phone being transient, ill attach the trace to the email. Ive tried looking into the trace but i have not much experience with them and have no clue on what could be the problem.

  • HI MArk,

The trace indicate the phone being transient, ill
attach the trace via a link to drop box. Ive tried looking into the trace but i
have not much experience with them and have no clue on what could be the
problem. Several posts indicate this kind of problem with firewalls but i dont think this is case i have exactly the configuration provided by INE for the l2tpvpn router and switch. Any help would be greatly appreciated im frustated for being stuck at this

  • Hi Hector,

I see a few different SIP devices trying to register here. Does the phone keep changing IP addresses or do you have multiple SIP devices registered to the UCM?

I see SIP devices with the IPs:

    177.1.11.35

    177.1.11.34

    177.1.11.30

Which is it? Or is it possible it keeps rebooting and getting a different IP each time? (hint: check the DHCP server for more information on bindings and MAC to IP association).

  • It is the 177.1.11.35 , i had multiple sip devices connected but only the ones going through l2tp had problems which are 177.1.11.35 and 177.3.11.253, the ones local to INE worked ok.

  • Mark i think i may have found the problem but i cant test it, i have currently a double nat on my home lab one in the ISP router and then the one in the cisco router could this the problem for which SIP is not working?

  • Could be. But the VPN router for your connection to us will NAT your traffic out to the Internet, but not that which is routed across the tunnel. Well, that and I believe you are doing L2VPN - so not NAT at all for the phones. If you can't get it registered, just use it as a SCCP phone for now. You'll still get 98% feature parity. BTW, what is your latency like to our racks?

  • The latency is 150ms average, yeah i know traffic from the phones is not getting natted on the cisco router but i think its getting natted on the second nat from the ISP router and not much configuration options there to avoid that.

Ok ill do the labs with all phones in SCCP thanks a lot for the help mark!!
