Serial cables length ;)

I am building my home lab and I was wondering what serial cable length to get. Those are fairly expensive (compared to patch cables) so I don't want to buy them too short (or too long and make a mess).

  • Hi SUBnet192,

cable length requirements for your home lab depend on several factors:

    • cable run (by the book or freestyle)
    • vertical distance between the devices
    • placement of the FR switch (most routers are connected to this device)
    • ...

For my home lab, 3 ft serial cables did the job.

  • I like to do a decent cabling/wiring job. Messy racks are unpleasant to work with (production or lab :) )

I'll get 3ft cables and put the FR switch in the middle. That should cover it. Thanks!

  • If you like decent cabling, I would take the Access Server into consideration. Those 3ft octal cables have to reach all kinds of places (6ft is also available but I consider them overkill).

I bought a used Digi CM32 on ebay, which uses standard patch cables to connect to the console ports, so that'll help a lot in keeping things tidy :) Thanks for the heads up!
