ASA 5505 as gateway

Hello everybody.

I have worked with ASA 5540 as firewall and VPN concentrator. I am thinking in buying an ASA 5505 for using as VPN endpoint for accessing my home network and my lab. I have thinked about using a 2600 router, but the ASA is quieter.

Do you think an 5505 with "basic" license would do the job, or better to look for an "security +" licensed unit?

  • You don't really need security plus unless you have use for multiple VLANs. You can only have three with the basic license.

Yes. I you plan to add only the inside and outside VLAN interface, then you're good. For your requirement, a 5505 would be perfect I believe.

    Thank you!

  • I always suggest you to go through the model comparison.  You can choose model with your required licenses/VLANs/throughput/Type of VPNs supported etc.
