Data Plane Vs Control Plane

Dear Bros,

Can you enlighted me with the knowledge and difference between:


  • Data Plane
  • Control Plane
  • Hardware Plane
  • Software Plane

  • Dataplane is where the traffic is forwarded. It is traffic through the router and not to the router. To be able to forward traffic we need control plane where protocols like STP, EIGRP, OSPF, telnet, SSH etc resides.

    I have never heard about hardware plane or software plane but I guess the hardware plane would be the linecards in a router and software plane the area from where the software is loaded on storage.
