Generic PPPoE configuration

Hi, what is the difference between these two PPPOE client configurations.

I tried both, they worked. Config 2 has less commands, is it better? Thanks!

<PPPOE Client Config 1>

vpdn enable

vpdn-group 1
 request-dialin
  proto pppoe

int f0/0
 pppoe enable
 pppoe-client dial-pool-number 1
!
interface Dialer1
 ip addr 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer pool 1
 dialer-group 1

<PPPOE Client Config 2>

int f0/0
 pppoe enable
 pppoe-client dial-pool-number 1
!
interface Dialer1
 ip addr 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
 encapsulation ppp
 dialer pool 1

Comments

  • "vpdn-group" is the old command, it's been replaced with "bba-group" command. And it's configured on the Server's side, not client.

Here is a sample config for a client (pretty much your Config2):

    username R2 password pass

    !

    Interface Ethernet 0/0

     no ip address

     pppoe enable

     pppoe-client dial-pool-number 1

    !

    Interface Dialer1

mtu 1492 <-- very important if you are running OSPF across this link

ip address dhcp client-id FA0/0 <-- if using DHCP, otherwise just configure static IP

     encapsulation PPP

     dialer pool 1

dialer persistent <--  depends on the code, might not take it

     ppp authentication chap

     ppp chap hostname R1

     ppp chap password pass

     no peer neighbor-route
