VPIM ( CUC-UC)

Hi Everyone, I have not seen any discussions on this topic in this forum and would like to start one since this is a very much tetable topic.

first of all i have not seen a DNS server in INE voice racks...not sure if i am missing anything but i have been practicising on these racks for quite sometime

does anyone knows if it is really available ...and if yes pls provide details.

also some basic configuration on VPIM between UC and CUC would be much appreciated. I have read some docs and noticed that just defining VPIM location with access ID is all it is needed ( off course DNS is mandatory but i am assuming it will be preconfigured )

thanks in advance

  • are you referring to UC and CUE ? , did you try utility server as DNS ?

  • do we have DNS server running on utility server...i dont see a mention of it on user guide on rack rental also no one actually mentioned about it.

is it actually running on that server...do  you have more details on it...i dont see it mentioned on user guide and forum...even on INE website

  • not sure something which i've not tried yet, but will be doing it this evening, i would say between UCCX or Utility server we should be able to use 1 as DNS server, or something for INE to sort out soon being this as a possible topic on Lab.

  • Hi ,

If any one from INE is reading this post please respond..

  • Alright tested it last evening, and here are the results

    1) Utility Machine is a Win XP machine, can't do DNS on that

    2) UCCX Machine is a Win 2k3 Server, however it doesn't have the required files to start the DNS Service

What we need from INE is either

    1) Install DNS service on UCCX with hostnames : IP mapping for Unity Connection & CUE (in short take care of DNS bit for VPIM)

    or

    2) Provide appropriate files on the UCCX server so we can install DNS service and test VPIM

  • anyone from INE, Mark or Josh ? what do you think is the possible alternative for this ?

  • Hey all,

Happy to announce that we actually do have a fully configured DNS server (and LDAP server for that matter) on every INE Voice rack. This server is located on your voice backbone subnet, and is accessible for DNS and LDAP lookup, although you are not able to RDP and login to it. This is in keeping with trying to provide the exact same environment as you would see in the actual CCIE Voice exam (just like our classrooms are - see this blog articlehttp://bit.ly/aWkVRV).

Here are the details about the server:

    - IP Address: 177.1.100.110

    - Contains an FTP server with 3 files downloadable as follows:
    - Unity Connect VPIM License "UC-VPIM.lic"
    - LDAP Schema PDF file with details "INE-AD.pdf"
    - DNS Schema file with details "INE-DNS.txt"

    - DNS Server fully configured
    - Details for all Host Records can be found by FTP in and downloading the file called "INE-DNS.txt"

    - LDAP Server fully configured
    - Details for all DC/OU/CN structure can be found by FTP'ing in and downloading the file called "INE-DNS.txt"

    - Accessible from every rack via LDAP or FTP with same User/Pass:
    - Username: "administrator"
    - Password: "cciecisco"

I have hand-typed up the entire DNS layout (as found in the file mentioned above), but I figured since I just spent 30 minutes doing it, I might as well post it here in this thread, rather than making you download the file via FTP   :D

    So here it is:
(Don't know if the ASCII formatting will get a bit skewed when this posts. If so, you may still want to download the file via FTP from your Rack Rental VPN session)

  • Perfect !!, shall try this next time i go labb'g, i would suggest to add this material to VORack Access Guide as well, both these things are missing from it

    thanks for prompt response.

  • sorry do have a question on this :) , good to have questions

    1) from A records it seems we need to use one of the IP address 177.3.254.2 or 177.3.11.2 for CUE modue on BR2, please correct if wring ?

    2) uc & cue both are in same zone, ine.com ?, please see below text from cisco website

"Each domain suffix must be unique within the Cisco Unity Express and Cisco Unity sites. For example, naming the sites cue4.cisco.com, cue6.cisco.com, and unity.cisco.com does not work, because the suffix for all sites is cisco.com. Instead use a scheme such as cue4.cue.cisco.com, cue6.cue.cisco.com, and unity.unity.cisco.com. This scheme distinguishes between the cue.cisco.com and unity.cisco.com domains "

although version described in the doc are not the same, What do you think ?

I would appreciate if someone can put a document or a sample config that can be tested with DNS server.

    Thanks again

  • you FTP'd to XP utility machine, need to try 100.110

  • Thanks Mark, got the files where you mentioned, got this to work from CUE --> UC, however not the other way round.

can't find on UC where to set Location as Local ?? any ideas ?

  • any suggestions anyone can't get VPIM to work from UC to CUE, one of the reason which i could think is UC doesn't show me where to specify a VPIM Location as local similar to CUE ?

is there any good link for this ?

  • its not even working for me from any side. dns is in place and cue and cuc can ping each other in their respective domains using hostnames....i verified config multiple times....and i am pretty sure all is good

  • interestingly i dont see anything on trace networking vpim all. i ran trace dns all and i see following events

    cue7# show trace buffer tail

i verified dns connectivity is fine, also i added reverse dns zones though its not needed per my understanding...any clues what i am missing...

blind addressing is on and when i leave message system does allow ( both CUC and CUE) to leave message for a  location reciepient but they show stuck in the system when i login to CUE

  • On CUE have you specified the location defined for CUE as Local ?

  • Mark/Josh,

would you be able to suggest on VPIM messages from Connection to Express, everything configured according to Cisco doc and after composing message and marking it for an extension in Express, lady does says "Message Sent" however nothing shows up on CUE or in 'trace networking vpim receive' on other end, document referred below

used CUE bit from this, configured UC from a different doc as this is one is with Unity.

    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps5520/products_configuration_example09186a00804dfe88.shtml

what debugs/traces on RTMT should help ?

  • Mark/Josh,

based on the DNS config provided on INE DNS Racks, don't think VPIM is going to work , here is text from Cisco

Each domain suffix must be unique within the Cisco Unity Express and Cisco Unity sites. This scheme distinguishes between the cue.cisco.com and unity.cisco.com domains.

here we have it configured as 'ine.com' same suffix ??

  • I corrected this sometime back, it should have been updated in the documentation - not sure why it was not. I will get this corrected by Monday morning.

    Cheers,

  • Thanks Mark, will give it a go this evening.

  • can get this to work in one direction only CUE -- > UC with IP address, with DNS, can't get this to work other way round.

would you know where do i provide Domain Name Server referece on UC, when i try and send message using UC to CUE, lady says Message Send Successfully, nothing arrives.

however how would UC resolve that ?

In CUE there is a option to set one, don't see in UC ?

  • its under smtp configuration --- server

  • so we specify DNS server IP address under SMTP Server section in UC ?,

hmm! will try that next time

  • tried as suggested, however under SMTP > Server page we can only define domain name, no place to define reference for DNS Server, please see attached.

again works from CUE to Unity Conn

  • Yes thanks @ciscoindia.

    Amit,

SSH into the UC server and type:

    set network dns primary 177.1.100.110

then it will have you reboot.
