USB 7 port Hub Versus a Typical Access Server...

    Hi All

I am struggling to get hold of a 2511 or even a NM16a to stick in my spare 2620 so Im looking at alternative Access server solutions to be able to console into my lab kit remotely, can anyone offer any alternatives to that non cisco but compatible?

Also, would buying 7 x USB to serial converters then pluggin those into a USB hub work? Id be using a desktop pc runing Windows XP.Windows supports upto 256 comms port.

    please help

    Abx

I don't see a problem with this, Abx - although I think you will spend more money on the hubs and USB Serial adapters than anything.  Remember the 7ports need to be powered externally as the usb bus 500mA can't pump out power to both the hub and more than 2 or 3 devices at once.

I *STRONGLY* recommend any Prolific RS232->DB9 adapters - and no other brand.  They're more expensive but they will certainly work for any application.  I've been bitten hard over the last years on crappy adapters that simply failed on me.

My opinions are of my own and not those of my employers
