Hello All,

I need some help with this error:

Frequently we get this message and the network going down. All the distribution switches of the network get the same type of error message:

The vlan ID 12300 does'nt exist in our network. The problem occurs sometimes, the last week happens 3 times, but stay months and nothing occurs.

The topology is:

Core 6509

Distribution: 2911, 3750

Access: 1900, 2950, 2960, 3550

We already follow the recommendation of Cisco site and check and the Native VLAN ID of the trunk ports are all setting to 1 in the both ends.

Someone knows what could generate this type of error? Any help will be great.

Hmm ... Some switch on the network sends out bad information, check how your switches setup (VTP mode and domain names).  May be someone is connecting new switch on the network with different VLAN's on it and it tryes to propogate this information through out your network????

Error Message  

%SPANTREE-2-BLOCK_PVID_LOCAL : Blocking [chars] on [chars]. Inconsistent local vlan.

Explanation    The spanning-tree port with the specified spanning-tree instance and interface has a port VLAN ID inconsistency and will be held in spanning-tree blocking state until the port VLAN ID inconsistency is resolved. The specified spanning-tree instance is that of the native VLAN ID of the specified interface.

Recommended Action    Verify that the configuration of the native VLAN ID is consistent on the interfaces on each end of the 802.1Q trunk connection. Once the configuration is corrected, spanning tree will automatically unblock the interfaces as appropriate.

Yes i saw this Cisco Link.

About VTP I setup in the Core Switch as a VTP Server and the other Switches as a VTP client with a password. We check and VTP is ok. Your question about new switch on the network is what I suspicious, but we don't have control about all the access ports on the 115 switches of the network. My suspicious is that someone is connecting a new switch in a 1900 switch access-port. There is a way to stop this, or block new switches?

Running VTP server in the core then you have big spanning tree domain and a lot of vlan extended (most likely).  My personal preference is to run Transparent on all devices. 

To block bdpu's on access layer port you can use spanning-tree bdpu guard command.  It will shutdown down the port if it see bpdu's incoming.

Unfortunately the 1900 Switch does'nt accept the spanning-tree bdpu guard command. The company uses the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software, and this switches are the oldest one . I will try to change the CatOS/IOS for one that accept this command.

This is funny, I have been getting this errors on two spoke sites with only one uplink. It was sending the port in disable mode for no "good" reason. All trunks configured properly, no apparent configuration issues. The hub was not reporting anything. The temporary fix I applied is disabling spanning tree for those VLAN's. Fixed the issue. I actually have a tac case about this and supposed to troubleshoot tonight. Meanwhile if you are still having problems:

no spanning-tree vlan <x> for all vlan's it was sending it to blocking. Please use this only if you have the same scenario. No other connections to the switch reporting the issue, you don't want to stop spanning tree on a "hub" switch.

Hi Andrei,

This problem propagate for all switches in the network. Unfortunately I can not disable the spanning tree, because the block occurs for all vlans in the network. If the TAC response something good, please send to me.

I know in theory it doesn't matter, but for consistency sake, did you match the VTP version (hopefully 2), domains, modes (hopefully transparent) everywhere?

Yes the VTP version is one for all devices, because we have 1900 Switches that not accept version 2. The domain mode is configured the Core as Server and the other devices as client. Why configure all in transparent mode?

I don`t know very well how the VTP works...

Cool, but please do it on a maintenance window, sometimes in some weird scenarios changing VTP from server to transparent could cause problems! :)
