    Re: SecureCRT in CCIE Lab

Unless something has changed recently you can expect to use version 3 or 4.  This means no tabs Sad

Well isn't this a suprise. I am watching your "Lab Strategy Video" on COD and you respond to me at the same time. This is definitely a good sign.

    Thanks for the response Brian.

Will it be possible to connect to the Access Server and open up multiple windows and reverse telnet on each of the devices?

Even though you won't have the latest version of SecureCRT you can make some basic changes to the default settings.  Here are a few common ones:

    1) Set the screen scrollback buffer to the maximum

    2) Log the screen output to a file

    3) Map the menu function of copy-paste to the ~ key using the keymap editor.  This means you can just highlight something with the mouse and then hit the ~ key to paste the highlighted data.

    4) Change the screen color from black on white to green on black.

    Re: SecureCRT in CCIE Lab

When you get into the lab there will be SecureCRT shortcuts on the desktop of the Windows XP PC.  There will be one for each device (i.e. R1, R2, R3, etc) plus one for the access server's console.  This means you can either connect to the access server's console and then reverse telnet to the devices or open multiple SecureCRT windows for each device.  Personally I find it a little hard to deal with ten windows (one to each device) but it's really a personal preference.  Whatever method you choose make sure that's what you use to practice with at least for the last couple weeks leading up to your lab.

For me a terminal is just a terminal doesnt make much of a different.

I always use putty, and puttycm for tabs. To be honest i like to use a TermServ so I dont think I will miss the tabs at the Lab.

I'm trying to automate SecureCRT to open a new window for each router and switch.  I telnet to the rack at port 2001 for R1, but I do not get beyond the username and password.  What is the problem?   :o)  Truls

    RE: SecureCRT in CCIE Lab

To which racks are you trying to do this?  Your own, or the IE racks?

The IE racks are driven by username mapping to ports.   If it's your own terminal server, you may want to do a "show line" to see which lines are truly being used.  On newer routers, you may find your line numbers starting at 2033 depending on which slot the NM-16/NM-32 is in.

If you have a 2509/2511, then 2001 is perfectly fine.

It is indeed, but you are actually not telnetting directly to the terminal server.  :)

If you go into the Members section, and click on the Rack Rentals tab...

Find your session and click on "Rack Access Info"  You will find detailed access information where you merely change the username you log in with (password is the same).

For instance I'm on Rack 3 right now.  So I use:

    rsrack3   AS Console
    rsrack3r1  R1 Console
    rsrack3r2  R2 Console

    rsrack3r4  R4 Console

I also changed the font to "Courier New". I like this font because it has nice spacing between the lines (requires more scrolling) but this is good for looking at lines of config and making sure its all correct and there are no traps left in the preconfiguration. I didn't do this in my first lab attempt but after that my study and including my next lab attempt (passed), and even now in my working environment, I always use Courier New.

I know this is a really old post, but I thought i'd add this for anyone who does a search for SecureCRT in the lab environment...
